Unit 2 Assessment period; Mock exams 6th March - 24th March 2023. Academic Review Evening 30th March 2023
Dear GA Family
We are writing to share with you your child’s end of Unit 2 Mock exam timetable which starts from Monday 6th March 2023. We are also writing to give you information about how you can support your child to succeed in these exams.
Assessment overview: Mocks and KIPs
The second assessment cycle of this academic year is coming up. Your child will set a series of mock exams which will allow them to identify their areas of strength and development. This is the last round of mock exams that your child will sit before their GCSE examinations in May. The mock examinations begin on the 6th March and run until the 24th March 2023 and will take place under exam conditions. There will be no KIP assessments for Year 11 students in this unit.
What are the mock examinations?
- Real past examination papers - some whole papers and some sections
- In exam conditions
- Marked with indicative grades
- These exams will give a good indication of gaps our students have in their knowledge and set off a series of interventions that will ensure every success in the actual exams
- As with the final GCSE exams, warm ups will start from 8am to help your child prepare
What happens after the mocks?
- We will reset the classes for Unit 3 to ensure that students are accessing the right support to progress even further as they enter their final weeks with us at Gloucester Academy.
- You and your child will be able to pick their reports up at the Academic Review Evening on the 30th of March 2023 where you will also be able to speak to your child’s teachers about their progress.
- Teachers will give your child feedback on what they need to improve and will adapt their lessons to take account of any gaps
- If your child misses a mock exam, we do have a limited number of exam ‘mop up’ sessions however there isn’t always the availability for this to take place and your child might end up receiving an 0 for their missed exam.
When are the actual GCSE exams?
- Academic exams run across May and June and Summer exam timetables have been emailed to your child’s Gloucester Academy email. Vocational exams take place over the course of year 10 and 11.
- Results day will be the 23rd August 2022. Our students will stay in school full time until the day they finish their last exam to ensure they get all the support they need.
How can I support my child to prepare for the assessments?
- Ensure your child knows what assessments they have on what days using the timetable below (they will also have this printed on card)
- Your child has been making flashcards across their subjects in year 11 - please encourage them to revise from these and test them on key terms and ideas
- Encourage them to complete their maths Sparx/Seneca homeworks online
- Continue to use the Google form to sign your child up for Elite Training & Intervention sessions put on by the fantastic staff at GA. https://forms.gle/ote7CJdmSKrYFkCV9
- Encourage them to use their assessment manifests to tick off their key revision activities against the topics that will come up in the exams
- We understand that households can be very busy and you may not have time to test your child and if this is the case we just ask that you support your child by checking they understand what it is they need to learn and they have the space to do this.
What homework do students do in weeks 11,12 & 13?
- During these weeks your child’s Homework practice book will be used to practice any definitions from their Knowledge Organiser that they do not know, or your child may continue to write flashcards that they can then revise from.
- They will continue to complete their Sparx and Seneca homeworks in this week
If you have any questions around assessments at all please contact Mr Meldrum using the email wmeldrum@gloucesteracademy.co.uk
We look forward to studying and celebrating with you soon.
Yours sincerely
Mr W Meldrum
Deputy Headteacher
