Year 11 - Unit 1 Assessment

Re: Unit 1 Assessment period. Mocks 14th November - 25th November. KIP assessments and Spanish speaking exams 28th November- 2nd December 2022 - Year 11

Dear GA Family

We are writing to share with you your child’s end of Unit 1 Mock exam and KIP Assessment timetable which starts from Monday 14th November 2022.  We are also writing to give you information about how you can support your child to succeed in these exams and assessments.

Assessment overview: Mocks and KIPs

The first assessment cycle of this academic year is coming up. Your child will set a series of KIP assessments (Knowledge is Power) and mock exams which will allow them to identify their areas of strength and development before their final two Units of school.  The mock examinations begin on the 14th November and run until the 25th November 2022 and will take place under exam conditions.  KIP assessments take place in their usual lessons between 21st and 28th November 2022.

What are the KIP assessments?

  • The assessment is made up of 50 words from your child’s Knowledge Organiser for each subject.
  • All students in a year group sit the same assessments
  • They are made up from the words they study at the beginning of every lesson as a ‘KIP quiz’ and practise every day as part of their homework
  • Students with additional needs will have had the support they need to access the test so they are not at a disadvantage.

What are the mock examinations?

  • Real past examination papers - some whole papers and some sections
  • In exam conditions
  • Marked with indicative grades
  • These exams will give a good indication of gaps our students have in their knowledge and set off a series of interventions that will ensure every success in the actual exams.
  • As with the final GCSE exams, warm ups will start from 8am to help your child prepare

What happens after the assessments and mocks?

  • We will reset the classes for Unit 2  to ensure that students are accessing the right support to progress even further as they enter the next thirteen weeks of the school year.
  • You will receive a report with the overview of their percentage in each KIP subject and their rank
  • Their report will include an indicative grade based on their performance in each subject in the mocks
  • Teachers will give your child feedback on what they need to improve and will adapt their lessons to take account of any gaps
  • If your child misses an assessment, they will be expected to stay behind after school when they are next in to complete the missed assessment. We will send you a text message to let you know if this is the case.  If they fail to do this they will receive a zero score for that assessment or mock, which will affect their setting for the next academic year.

When are the actual GCSE exams?

  • Academic exams run across May and June with vocational exams taking place over the course of year 10 and 11
  • Results day will be the 23rd August 2022.  Our students will stay in school full time until the day they finish their last exam to ensure they get all the support they need.

How can I support my child to prepare for the assessments?

  • Encourage them to complete their daily Knowledge Organiser homework in their homework book
  • Ensure your child knows what assessments they have on what days using the timetable below (they will also have this printed on card)
  • Your child has been making flashcards across their subjects in year 11 - please encourage them to revise from these and test them on key terms and ideas
  • Encourage them to complete their maths Sparx homeworks online
  • Encourage them to complete their Seneca homeworks online
  • Encourage them to use their assessment manifests to tick off their key revision activities against the topics that will come up in the exams
  • We understand that households can be very busy and you may not have time to test your child and if this is the case we just ask that you support your child by checking they understand what it is they need to learn and they have the space to do this.

What homework do students do in weeks 11,12 & 13?

  • During these weeks your child’s Homework practice book will be used to practice any definitions from their Knowledge Organiser that they do not know.
  • They will continue to complete their Sparx and Seneca homeworks in this week

If you have any questions around assessments at all please contact Ms Jones using the email  cjones@gloucesteracademy.co.uk

We look forward to studying and celebrating with you soon.

Yours sincerely
Ms C Jones
