Gloucester Academy

Careers Welcome

Climb the mountain to the best university or profession.

Each student is equipped with careers knowledge, skills and experience to make aspirational choices leading to successful and fulfilling lives.

At Gloucester Academy we want to ensure that students leave education with the skills and knowledge enabling them to best participate in post-compulsory education and, later, in employment.

Pupil entitlement

All pupils are entitled to:

  • Find out about technical education qualifications and apprenticeship opportunities, as part of a careers programme which provides information on the full range of education and training options available at each transition point;

  • Hear from a range of local providers about the opportunities they offer, including technical education and apprenticeships – through events, assemblies and group discussions;

  • Understand how to make applications for the full range of academic and technical courses.

A number of events, integrated into the school careers programme, will offer providers an opportunity to come into school to speak to pupils and/or their parents/carers.

The academy has a designated Careers Lead, Lucy Blick, who works closely with the GROWS Network of local further and higher education providers, Gloucestershire’s Local Enterprise Provider gFirst LEP and our link Career Enterprise Adviser.

Students have access to a comprehensive curriculum careers offer as well as an online careers platform; Unifrog and participate in a range of activities designed to give them an understanding of further and higher education, and labour market. There are assemblies hosted by local colleges, universities and apprenticeship providers, sessions devoted to careers education, encounters with employers, and access to independent career advice.

The Careers Education Information Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) programme is progressive for students in years 7 to 11 and follows the eight Gatsby benchmarks as recommended by the government.

Premises and Facilities

The school will make the main hall, classrooms and/or meeting rooms available for discussions between the provider and the students, as appropriate to the activity and available on the date/time required. The school will also make available any specialist equipment to support provider presentations. This will all be discussed and agreed in advance of the visit/event.

Providers are welcome to leave a copy of their prospectus or other relevant course literature at our mountain checkpoint desk, which is managed by our Achievement Leader and KS4 Careers Lead. Mountain checkpoint is available to all students.
