Gloucester Academy

Health and Fitness Breakfast Club, timings and compulsory enrichment

Dear GA Families

We are committed to ensuring that every child at Gloucester Academy is able to participate in a wide range of extra-curricular activities.  Every single student at Gloucester Academy will climb their own personal mountain to the very best universities and professions.  In order to do this, it is essential that they develop hobbies and passions that will stay with them through their lives.  With this in mind we are expanding our enrichment provision.

New Health and Fitness Breakfast Club - free for all students every morning 7.15am to 8.20am

This is open for all students from 7.15am to 8.20am.  There will be no entry after 7.45am.  Students will not be able to leave until dismissed at 8.20am, when they will be escorted to their year groups.

Students will be able to come on site via the pedestrian gate, alongside the visitor’s car park on Painswick Road.  Students will be able to take part in light exercise, for instance on the various pieces of equipment in the fully fitted gym, as well as equipment put out in the sports hall.

A basic cereal style breakfast, toast and juice will also be provided free of charge.  At 8.20am students will be required to go to their year group areas as normal, please note this will be outside of the building so a waterproof coat is recommended where necessary.

Compulsory Enrichment

Each week all year 7, 8 9 and 10 students will take part in one compulsory ‘period 6’ enrichment session.  This will allow students to continue their period 5 PE lesson through for a double period, creating lots of extra opportunities.  At present this is likely to be year 7 - Monday, 8 Tuesday, 9 Wednesday and 10 Thursday (TBC). Meaning students will be exited on those days at 4.05pm from the Painswick Road pedestrian exit.

If you have children that are awaiting to collect their siblings in other year groups, they may make use of the homework club which is run daily.  Year 11 students will continue to have period 6 each day based on their subject timetable.

Enrichment

We will be moving to 3 x 13-week units through the year.  Weeks 1-10 in each unit have a full after school enrichment programme running for students to participate in each day after school.  Students will make their choices through an enrichment fair to be held in school.  They will be able to remain or choose a different experience every 13 weeks.

Break times

We already offer a range of activities during break times, including homework club, netball, and football in the new portable arenas.  From September this will be enhanced with handball, fitness, table tennis and badminton.

We welcome any suggestions from the local community on additional enrichment activities that would be of benefit to our students.  Students will not be able to change enrichment activities mid unit, and we will do our utmost to ensure that every child gets their first choice, however this cannot be guaranteed.

Please encourage your child to take advantage of all of the programmes on offer at Gloucester Academy.

Yours sincerely

Mr Jonathan Heap
